ABOUT MY WORK

PAINTINGS

I have been an artist all my life: as an actor and musician,  poet, performance artist, video artist, rock musician and painter. I  taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston for 32 years.  Search the web for all info on Jeff and Jane Hudson, the band known for be synth rock pioneers. My resume of career can be found below.

I have always loved painting, and during the late 70's -early 80's I created large scale acrylic and plaster paintings, and later a series of figurative gouaches. As life intervened, I stopped painting to pursue other interests (also lack of studio had an effect).

After the intervening years, I began again, with gouaches and acrylics, feeling my way into my imagery. My masters were Kandinsky, Hilma af Klint, Klee, Sonia Delaunay, early European modernism.  I knew the area of interest well.

Lately, since the pandemic, I've been swept up in the wild ride of the evolution of humanity, its resistence to change, and its aspiration to transcendence. The thrust of my work has been more of a mystical journey, but I found myself thrown back onto the earth to find the ground of nature and home. The 'vortex series' and 'room series' are reflective of that impact.

I have always had an interest in esoteric spiritual material and ideas and have practiced the Tarot as a reflective system. I made the decision to create a series of pieces based on the 22 Major Arcana, the persistent archetypes of human experience. These images sit in parallel with the minor arcana, the four suits of 52 cards. I have chosen not to present a 'deck' of images, but a sequence of events culminating in personal  evolution.

Each painting has a word or two attached  about its referential meaning.

I hope this piques your interest in the work, and in the arena from which it comes .

Thank you.

Jane Hudson
